India: an official routed bribes through his wife, the CBI caught him red-handed

To blur the trail, the official allegedly chose a trusted go-between: his wife. The CBI arrested on 19 August Sandeep, a deputy accounts controller and financial adviser at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in New Delhi, caught red-handed as a ₹10 lakh bribe passed through his wife. He allegedly demanded ₹15 lakh to speed up a private contract's renewal. Presumed innocent.

Using a relative as a relay is a classic concealment attempt: keeping the money off the decision-maker's own hand to complicate proof. But the CBI's red-handed operations, with marked notes and surveillance, are designed precisely to seize the transaction as it happens — whoever carries it.
